Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
