The British tennis star earned the most important victory of his career by coming back from a early deficit to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

Even though he had before overcome Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win signifies Norrie's first ever success over a sitting world number one.

"Massive. So big for me," said Norrie, who is now the latest English competitor in history to defeat a global number one. "Bouncing back from health issues last year, I lost in the first round of qualies here. I just tried to embrace my performance in the latter part of the year. To get a win like this, it's the most significant success of my professional life, my first win over the global number one and probably the most in-form competitor in the world right now."

Norrie, seeded No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's impressive run of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive elite tournament successes, which marked the finest stretch of performances in the Spaniard's developing professional path.

The top seed appeared to be moving confidently towards victory early on as he sailed in the initial stanza. Nevertheless, the British contender gradually fought his way back into the game by delivering with greater precision and pulling the Spanish opponent into extended, grueling points. His persistent shot tolerance and dependability slowly left its mark.

During large parts of the battle, the world number one performed well on serve but he had difficulty to find his timing with his rally strokes. The rising talent looked especially struggling executing his primary weapon, which has been the top weapon in the world for much of this season, producing 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 errors.
