The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be building a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
